The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme & Courses at Hillel Academy

Track 1 – The IB Diploma Programme

The IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) is an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations that prepares students, aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond. It has been designed to address the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well being of students. The programme has gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities.www.ibo.org

Hillel Academy offers the most comprehensive IB curriculum in Jamaica. Our first IB Diploma Programme cohort graduated in May 2010, and our results have consistently been on par or above international averages. Our IB graduates have been accepted to universities and colleges, a great many with handsome scholarship packages, in the USA, Canada, UK, the Caribbean, India and Brazil.

The IB Diploma Programme provides the breadth and depth of study demanded by universities around the world. It demands excellence from motivated students and teachers and is truly a passport to higher education internationally. The Diploma Programme prepares the individual for an advanced programme of university-level study.

  • Students study six subjects chosen from an offering of nineteen subjects, within the six subject groups
  • Three of the six subjects are studied at Higher Level (240 teaching hours each, over 2 years)
  • Three subjects are studied at Standard Level (150 teaching hours each, over 2 years)
  • Students complete an Extended Essay (EE) which is a research paper of approximately 4,000 words
  • Students complete a Theory of Knowledge course (TOK)
  • Students participate in Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) activities
  • Qualifes students for the Hillel Academy High School Diploma
  • Prepares students for college and university entrance
  • Readies students for success at university and in life beyond

Track 2 – IB Courses

The IB Courses offer an alternative route for students wishing to earn a High School Diploma at the end of Grade 13. Students pursue academically challenging IB Diploma subjects at Higher and/or Standard Level in a combination tailor-made for the individual.

  • Students choose up to 6 subjects from an offering of 19
  • A combination of subjects at Standard and Higher Level are chosen to satisfy the criteria for the Hillel Accademy High School Diploma
  • Student’s participation in Theory of Knowledge & Extended Essay is optional
  • Students participate in Creativity, Activity & Service activities
  • Leads to college and university entrance and foundation courses
  • Prepares students for success at university and life beyond and for the world of work

The Extended Essay

TThe world studies Extended Essay option allows students to choose a topic of global significance, from at least one of the Diploma Programme subjects. The Extended Essay requires students to independently research an in-depth study of a question and produce an essay of not more than 4,000 words.

Theory of Knowledge (ToK)

Theory of Knowledge is a course centered around questions such as “How do we know what we know?” or “What is Truth?”. Students are taught to seek out knowledge through critical thinking and analysis of the Ways of Knowledge, Perception, Emotion, Reason and Language. By the end of the course, students should be proficient in formulating arguments and analyzing knowledge claims. The class comprises of discussion points that are argued “for” and “against”. For their final assessment students are required to write a 1,600 word essay and do an oral presentation.

Creativity, Action and Service (CAS)

All students must complete at least 150 CAS hours over the 2 year Diploma Programme. CAS requires that students become involved in a range of activities in addition to their academic studies throughout the Diploma Programme. Creativity encourages students to engage in the arts and creative thinking. Activity seeks to develop a healthy lifestyle through physical activity and Service with the community offers a vehicle for a different kind of learning with academic value. At the completion of every CAS activity the student is expected to write a “Reflection” piece describing the impact of that service or activity. The three strands of CAS enhance students’ personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning and self-discovery

University Counseling

All Hillel Academy High School students will find assistance with their career choices and university applications right here at School. Information evenings are held that begin the discussion with both students and their parents. Many U.S., U.K., Canadian and other university Admissions Officers visit Hillel during the school year and sessions are organized for students to meet with them and learn about their university. In addition Hillel Academy, in partnership with the American International School of Kingston, host an Annual College Fair in October in which approximately 40 colleges and universities from around the world participate. International Baccalaureate students are urged to consult our College Counselor in selecting universities and colleges for application. Students and parents are offered individual advice and assisted in the complex process of completing application forms, essay writing and applying for financial assistance.
